Check a product against the allergen you select
Checking food for allergies often means reading beyond the product name. An ingredient list, allergen declaration and trace information can each matter. BiteOrNot compares available product information with your selected restriction and returns PASS, CHECK or AVOID. The result depends on the information available for that particular product.
For example, someone checking the Gluten / wheat restriction can select that option before scanning a packaged product. This is a check against the chosen restriction, not a certification of the food. Do not read a result for one selected allergen as a statement about every other allergen or about manufacturing conditions.
A barcode lookup may return a product name without enough allergen detail. In that situation, label scanning lets you photograph the ingredient list and relevant declarations on the package. CHECK should be expected when allergen information is incomplete or unclear. An absent database entry or unreadable statement should not be treated as evidence that an allergen is absent.

Scan the food barcode
BiteOrNot looks up the packaged product and compares available ingredient and allergen information with that selection.
Review the decision
PASS means no conflict was found in the available data. AVOID indicates an apparent conflict. CHECK calls for closer review; none of these results guarantees allergen detection.
Photograph the label if data is missing
Include the complete ingredient list and any relevant allergen or trace statements. Keep text readable and avoid glare or cropped lines.
Follow up on CHECK
When information remains incomplete or ambiguous, BiteOrNot shows CHECK. Read the package and seek clarification from the manufacturer when the label does not answer your question.

Keep the physical label in view
Product databases can omit allergen information, and formulations or manufacturing statements can change. A record from an earlier package may not describe the product currently on the shelf.
OCR can miss a word or misread label text. A scan cannot verify manufacturing practices or establish that cross-contact did not occur. Always check the physical product label when it matters for your health or allergy. BiteOrNot does not replace professional medical advice.
