Vegan food and barcode scanner

Choose Vegan or Vegetarian in BiteOrNot to check packaged products against your selected diet restriction. The app uses available ingredient and product data and returns PASS, CHECK or AVOID, with a label fallback for incomplete barcode records.

Read ingredients in the context of your diet

A product name or front-of-pack description may not answer your ingredient question. A vegetable-flavoured product, for example, still needs its ingredient list reviewed. BiteOrNot checks available product information against Vegan or Vegetarian, depending on which option you select. Choose the option you actually want to apply before scanning.

Vegan and Vegetarian are separate selections. A result for one should not be interpreted as a result for the other. The product check relates to your active restriction and the data the app can inspect; it does not certify the product or verify a manufacturer's production process.

Some ingredient names do not make their origin clear. If the available information is ambiguous or incomplete, the conservative result is CHECK rather than an assumed PASS. Photographing the label can help when a barcode record lacks ingredients, but a clearer photograph cannot resolve a source that the manufacturer has not identified on the package.

How to check a product

  1. Select Vegan or Vegetarian

Set the diet restriction that matches the check you want to make. Confirm the active selection when moving between different shopping needs.

  2. Scan a packaged product

Use the barcode to look up available product and ingredient data. Make sure the returned details correspond to the item you are checking.

  3. Read PASS, CHECK or AVOID

PASS means the available information did not conflict with your selection. AVOID indicates an apparent conflict. CHECK means the information needs further review.

  4. Use the label fallback

When barcode information is missing or too limited, photograph the complete ingredient list. Capture any extra wording that helps describe the ingredients.

  5. Leave ambiguous ingredients unresolved

BiteOrNot shows CHECK when the data is incomplete or unclear. Read the physical label and ask the manufacturer about ingredient origins when necessary.

Keep the physical label in view

Product databases may contain incomplete or older ingredient lists. Recipes can change between purchases, and similar-looking versions of a product may have different ingredients. Check the package you have, even if you recognise the brand.

OCR can misread fine print or leave out text near a fold. Compare extracted information with the physical label. A diet check is not a vegan or vegetarian certification, and it is not an allergen assessment. Always check the physical product label when it matters for your health or allergy.
